Data sources

Venue listings

Listings start from Overture Maps Foundation Places (release 2026-08-19.0), an open dataset of business locations. We keep places whose map category or own name identifies them as a sauna, bathhouse, Korean spa, banya, hammam or cold-plunge venue, and remove:

  • businesses that sell, build, install or rent saunas and hot tubs;
  • massage businesses and medical spas;
  • hotels and lodging, closed places, and low-confidence records;
  • listings without a city, or without a website or phone number to check them.

659 places pass today. Overture records are published under provider licences including CDLA Permissive 2.0, Apache 2.0 and CC0.

OpenStreetMap

Some venues come from OpenStreetMap: places mapped as a sauna or public bath, with a name, city and a website or phone. © OpenStreetMap contributors; the data is available under the Open Database License (ODbL), and any database derived from those records carries the same terms.

Spas with bathhouse facilities

Spas whose names don’t mention a sauna are listed only when their own website mentions both a sauna and bathhouse-style facilities (banya, hammam, bathhouse, soaking or thermal pools, Korean spa). Day spas that only offer an infrared add-on are not listed.

Checking each website

We then read each listed business’s own website — the page in its listing plus, where needed, up to two of its amenities or facilities pages — respecting robots.txt and limiting requests to any one site. We record whether the page mentions a sauna, steam room, cold plunge, infrared or Finnish sauna, bathing pools or day passes, with the page address and date.

  • Sauna venues: 421 websites read. A venue whose listed website turned out to be unrelated to it (a parked or reused domain) is removed.
  • Gyms: 52,482 gym and community-center websites read; 3,971 mention a sauna and are listed. Gyms without a sauna mention are not listed.
  • Chains: for 38 chains with at least 30 location pages read, we show what share mention a sauna.

A mention is evidence, not a guarantee: a page may describe a sauna that is closed, members-only or at another location.

What “listed as” means

A venue’s type — infrared, traditional, bathhouse, cold plunge, steam — comes from its map category and its own name. It is not an inspection, and a venue may offer more than its listing says. Where we have checked a detail on the venue’s own website, the profile shows it with a link and the date.

What we don’t verify

Prices, opening hours, day-pass policies, age limits and dress codes change often. Always confirm with the venue before you go. Maps are served by Google Maps under Google’s terms.
